Pass Box (also known as a Pass Through, Pass-Through Chamber, or Transfer Hatch) is a specialized cleanroom device designed to safely transfer materials between two controlled environments ,between the same cleanliness level or lower level to higher level cleanroom while preventing cross-contamination.

Tools & Materials Needed

  • Materials: Pass box , silicone sealant (cleanroom-grade or non-yellowing), mounting screws or bolts , shims/packers, fire-rated foam (if required), plastic sheeting (to protect unit during installation)

Cleanroom pass boxes come with different features and sizes, So It is important to choose the right one for your cleanroom,

There are available in 3 different types,the main differences are the ventilation and contamination filtering.

  • Static/Passive pass box: transfer the material to two clean room which have classified,and has no air supply or extract. It is also known as passive pass box and equipped with UV light.
  • Dynamic/Active  pass box: between classified and non-classified areas. Material is passed through vertically HEPA filtered air.completely integrated within the partition wall. Designed to transfer the materials in cleanroom environment making sure that there is not much movement.
  • Laminar flow (Biological )pass box:  with built-in motor and GEL HEPA filter (H14),the air blows from the SUS diffuser by undirectional flow .To Meet the GMP requirements.

A dynamic pass box is a device with built-in motor and HEPA filter to supply air from Nozzles or diffuser, the air passed through HEPA H13/14 filters  is blowing over the material.

They are usually applied to transfer the material between non-cleanroom  to cleanroom  or between two cleanrooms with different levels.Transfering material from Class D ( ISO 8) to Class C ( ISO 7) would require a Dynamic Pass-Through Hatch.

The interlocked doors prevent both doors from opening simultaneously, minimizing direct airflow between adjacent rooms. Dynamic pass boxes further reduce contamination by supplying HEPA-filtered air into the chamber before materials are transferred.

Most cleanroom pass boxes are manufactured from:

Stainless steel is generally preferred because it is corrosion-resistant, easy to clean, and suitable for GMP environments.

Mechanical interlocks use purely mechanical components and require no electrical power. They are simple, reliable, and cost-effective. Electronic interlocks use electromagnetic locking systems, allowing integration with alarms, PLC controls, building management systems (BMS), and access control systems.
